Green Biologics Ltd (GBL) was founded in 2004 and provides world leading technology, based on proprietary advanced fermentation biotechnology, for the production of renewable butanol and other chemicals from waste and agricultural by-products. Butanol has a market today of around $4bn, and also is a most attractive second generation bio-fuel with superior characteristics in comparison to ethanol or biodiesel. The key to unlocking the $50bn biofuel market is cost, and GBL is expected to be the first company in the world to have its industrial fermentation technology in use at full industrial scale to produce bio-butanol at competitive prices compared to butanol which is obtained by the petroleum-based processes in use today.

FirstCapital was appointed as exclusive financial adviser to the company to raise investment to accelerate its commercial roll out. As the company has customers and partners across the globe, and in particular in China, India, Brazil and the US, it was important to deliver an investment syndicate that not only understood the chemicals and biofuels market but also that had the global reach to support the company as it grows. The result of the international roadshow was the completion of a £4.9mn investment round led by new investor Capricorn Venture Partners, a cleantech specialist fund based in Belgium with expertise in chemicals and industrial biotechnology as well as current portfolio companies in China, and including existing international investors Morningside Ventures, Carbon Trust and Oxford Capital Partners along with founders and management.
