FirstCapital delivers £4.9m investment round for Green Biologics
London, 3 June 2010 FirstCapital, the technology investment bank, has advised the bio-chemicals and biofuels pioneer, Green Biologics Limited (GBL), on its successful completion of an investment round of £4.9m. The round was led by Belgium-based Capricorn Venture Partners, a new investor in GBL through its Capricorn Cleantech Fund, and included participation by all GBL’s existing institutional investors - Morningside Ventures, Carbon Trust Investment Limited and Oxford Capital Partners - as well as by management and founder investors. GBL provides market-leading technology for the production of bio-butanol, a sought-after renewable chemical and a highly attractive next generation biofuel. This new investment will enable GBL to accelerate its commercialisation programme in its key markets of China, India, Brazil and the USA. By providing customers with retrofit packages to convert ethanol plants to bio-butanol as well as offering fermentation and process technology solutions for existing and new build bio-butanol plants, GBL is well placed to become the first company in the world to deploy its bio-butanol fermentation technology at industrial scale. The investment capital will also allow GBL to continue to invest in its technology development programme to further reduce the cost of production of bio-butanol from agricultural by-product and waste feedstocks and enable penetration of the $50bn biofuels market. The transaction attracted interest from a number of international venture capital funds; in a market that continues to be very cautious, the successful completion of this investment demonstrates that strong demand nevertheless exists for quality companies, particularly in the cleantech sector.
